Abstract

Basically, textbooks are very important in learning activities, both for teachers and students. However, sometimes a teacher will find it difficult to provide learning material. Particularly for English education teachers, implementing learning in schools still needs improvement and limitations. In addition, the availability of English textbooks published by Erlangga at SMK Negeri 1 Lamongan is still lacking, and there is only an English textbook for students and no English textbook published by Erlangga for teachers' guidance. Based on this background, the objectives of this study were (1) to find out how the use of English textbook published by Erlangga in improving students learning achievement in English classroom at SMK Negeri 1 Lamongan. (2) to find out the supporting and inhibiting factors in the use of English textbook published by Erlangga at SMK Negeri 1 Lamongan. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach through field research, with participants being two English teachers and six students of class XI of the office management skills program. Researchers used instruments, namely observation and interviews, and documentation. In analyzing the data, researchers used the theory of Miles and Huberman; reducing data, displaying data, and drawing conclusions and verification. To test the validity of the data, researchers used Cohen's theory. L, et al., with triangulation techniques. The study results show that (1) using an English textbook published by Erlangga is quite up-to-date in accordance with the latest curriculum, namely the Merdeka curriculum. The teacher uses an English “SPLASH” textbook for grades X, XI, and XII. Teachers use textbooks as guidelines in each lesson and plan student activities in class. Students use these books as learning media in obtaining information on English subjects. (2) the supporting factors in using English textbooks published by Erlangga are. First, the teacher must master the material to be taught to students beforehand, and second the availability of complementary facilities such as an LCD projector in each class. Third, the school provides English Textbooks Published by Erlangga for the grade X entitled “SPLASH”, which already uses the independent curriculum, and English Textbooks Published by Erlangga for grade XII entitled Forward an English, which still uses the K13 curriculum. The inhibiting factors for teachers in using the English textbook published by Erlangga are. First, the school has not provided an English textbook published by Erlangga for Grade XI. Second, the English textbook Erlangga published is still general and not detailed. However, regarding reading and vocabulary, it is unsuitable and does not meet the needs of English, including ESP, according to the studied major. Because this vocational high school (SMK) has many learning benchmarks, it is necessary to help students learn English according to their majors, such as Multimedia, Hospitality, Culinary, Office Management, Skin and Hairstyling, and others. And of course, the learning process requires an English textbook that includes ESP or English for Specific Purposes.
