Abstract

Keywords: Metaphors, Structural, Orientation, Ontological, Song Lyrics. Song lyrics are one of the literary works since one of the literary art which uses language as media for expressing someone's feelings or even experiences. A song consists of metaphorical words. Metaphor can be used to create a stronger title. Conceptual metaphor consists of three types of metaphors they are structural, orientation, and ontological metaphor. Therefore, this study is carried out to analyze 1) the type of conceptual metaphor and 2) the most commonly used of conceptual metaphor in selected song lyrics of Justin Bieber’s album “Justice”. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The data is taken from songs that are transformed into written transcript. Researcher collected the data by downloading songs and song lyrics. The researcher also reduced the data by selecting words and phrases that contain three types of conceptual metaphors. Finally, the data was analyzed. The finding in this study indicated that selected song lyrics contain all three types of conceptual metaphors. Among 48 conceptual metaphors found, each conceptual type has its own percentage: 50% for structural, 23% for orientation, and 27% for ontological metaphors. From these data, it can be seen that structural metaphors dominate metaphor. The researcher suggests a potential for further researcher to explore metaphor, especially in conceptual metaphor. Researcher expects the further researcher to use other theories besides the conceptual metaphor Lakoff and Johnson (1980) to increase knowledge about metaphors. Researcher also suggests to teachers and student in the teaching and learning process to increase the knowledge about the meaning of metaphors in song lyrics.
