Abstract

Keywords: Implicature, Conversational Implicature, Social Conflict, Rosaline Film This study focuses on the implicit meaning of every conversation in the film Rosaline by using Grice's implicature theory which states that implicature is an utterance from a speaker that has certain aspects of meaning without being said directly literally. Afterward, the implicature conversations found are then analyzed for any social conflicts that arise using Coser's theory. Based on this background, this research has to find out and analyze about 1) Types of conversational implicatures contained in the film Rosaline and 2) Social conflicts that arise in conversational implicatures in the film Rosaline. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method. The data obtained in the form of utterances from the characters in the film Rosaline which transformed into written transcripts. The researcher collected data by downloading a video that contains automatic subtitles, then re-checking it based on the script transcript so that subtitles corrected while watching the video. Then, the researcher reduced the data by selecting only utterances that contain conversational implicatures that analyzed. The results of this study reveal that some utterances which are included in the general conversational implicature type are often used by speakers because they do not require special knowledge to interpret with evidence from the amount of data in this type which is more, namely 29 data. While the second type, namely particularized conversational implicature, is used by speakers with certain knowledge who have less data, namely 19 data. Furthermore, each type of conversational implicature found has different social conflicts, namely 9 data on social position conflicts, 15 data on conflicts of interest, 2 data on role conflicts, and 23 data on no conflicts. The researcher suggests to other researchers to conduct research that is in line with this research, such as analyzing conversational implicatures but can develop further with different things, such as the formulation of the problem, theory, and the object of the problem under study. The researcher suggests that English lecturers can teach their students about conversational implicature and social conflict through this research. Students and readers can also rely on this research to broaden their knowledge, so that they can find out the hidden meaning of sentences through conversational implicatures.
