Abstract
Keyword: Students’ activities, students’ creativities, google classroom, recount text, students’ encouragement. During the pandemic, in Lamongan many institutions of education used education applications for online learning. Every application certainly had advantages and shortcoming. Not all applications can be considered effective for some students. So, based on the cases this study will focus on one of the applications that are Google Classroom, for teaching English subject, and this apps have a lot of research that is carried out before. Researchers want to know whether the Google Classroom applied in the school has the same impact on encourage students’ activities and creativities as several previous studies that have existed. In addition, researchers also want to assist teachers in obtaining other alternatives in optimizing online learning during the pandemic. In this study, researchers used the methods of descriptive qualitative to obtain data. The data was obtained from one of the classes that were considered active, namely class X Multimedia at SMKN 1 Kalitengah. This is based on Field Experience Practices (PPL) activities, in January. There are 32 students, consist of 21 male and 11 female students. For data collection techniques, researchers used observation, documentation, and interviews. Then for data analysis techniques, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Data collection started from the first meeting in March 2021. The researcher observed the students’ attendance as one of the activities and the students’ writing assignment as creativity data. From the data in the first meeting, there were 20 students took the lesson and active in asked about material, and collected assignments. For the assignments, students tended to have satisfactory grades. However, at the next meeting, the students had started to be inactive, only 12 second weeks and 11 in third weeks students who took the lesson. The creativities also decrease, especially in writing recount text. where only 12 students took lessons in the second week, and 11 students in the third. Then, for the interviews, it was found that there were several reasons why students became inactive, one of which was a lack of understanding and feeling less interested. Some students stated that they would be easier to understand when the material is explained by face-to-face. Of course, this cannot be represented by the Google Classroom application, because does not provide face-to-face online feature. It can be concluded that Google Classroom has not been optimal in encouraging students’ activities and creativities. The teachers can use other online learning application to make the students more interest and more active and creative in online learning.
