Abstract

An internet meme is one of the phenomena on social media that can be said as a process of delivering messages in a new form by combining verbal and nonverbal communication. One of the social phenomena that currently happening and expressed through memes is about online classes. As we know that since the outbreak of covid-19, the government has implemented a learning policy, namely learning from home. Both teachers and students definitely experience memorable events during online class activities. These memorable events serve as inspiration for making internet memes to express humor and criticism. This memes is used to entertain the reader through humorous messages to deliver the meaning. One of the theories concerning meaning is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This approach aims to understand how a text forms meaning in a context. Concerning about realization of meaning based on the SFL perspective, it deals with language metafunction. This study focused on three metafunctions namely Ideational, Interpersonal, and Textual functions. The aims of this study were: (1) describe metafunctions aspects found in the internet memes with the theme of online class in 9gag.com and (2) analyze the metafunctions realized in the internet memes with the theme of online class in 9gag.com. The writer analyzed metafunctions based on the theory of Halliday (1994) and Halliday & Matthiesen (2004, 2014). This research was conducted by using a qualitative method which the technique of data analysis used Miles, Huberman and Saldana’s (2014) method. The data were obtained from the 9gag website. Metafunctions’ aspects and its realization are analyzed through clauses of the online class memes. Clauses found in online class memes are 27 clauses. These clauses were analyzed through transitivity, mood and residue, and theme-rheme. The writer found on the research that: First, in the Ideational function, there are five aspects found in online class memes. They are material processes (14), relational processes (7), mental processes (3), existential processes (2), and behavioral process (1). Second, in the Interpersonal function, there are two types of moods found. They are declarative moods (23), and interrogative moods (2). Third, in the textual function, there are three types of theme found. They are topical themes (25), textual themes (11), and interpersonal themes (2).
