Abstract
Humans are social creatures who always need and have conversations to interact one of another, in many conversations, it is rare to find compliance in the communication process. Utterances certainly has meaning and purpose, but not all listeners are able to interpret the meaning through the utterance. For this reason, the speaker needs to make sure that the listener understands the meaning of the speaker said. It is about what speaker and hearer cooperate in that conversation. Like the Grice’s theory related the rules cooperate in conversation which use cooperative principle. The purposes of this research are: (1) To know the kind of observance maxims occurring the dialogue Barack Obama on The Ellen Show program. (2) To know the kind of flouting of maxim occurring in the dialogue Barack Obama on The Ellen Show program. Researcher used theory to conduct this research; namely the theory by Grice. The data were obtained from the utterances of interview Barack Obama in The Ellen Show program. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method in completing this research. Data were collected from interviews, using five videos in The Ellen Show program. The researcher used five link video has been transcript. The result of this research are: First, the kind of observance maxims occur in the dialogue Barack Obama on The Ellen Show program based on Grice’s theory that is found in this data are the maxim of quantity 3 data, the maxim of quality 1 datum, the maxim of relevance 3 data, the maxim of manner 3 data. Second, the researcher found the second finding is about kind of flouting maxim in uttered by Barack Obama which appeared in the data are flouting of maxim quantity 4 data, and flouting of manner 2 data. So, in the other words Barack Obama always tries to obey the four observance maxims. Also, Barack Obama does the most flouting maxim of quantity and flouting maxim of manner.
