Abstract

Speaking is a common activity that humans usually do to interact with one another, exchange information, share ideas, and know-how to understand one another. this research is focused on teaching speaking descriptive text by using describe and draw as a technique which can to helps the students to participate and maximal on speaking in the class. Moreover, it is also useful to reach the purpose of the teaching speaking. The objectives of this research were to find out whether describe and draw have an effect on increasing students’ speaking ability and know whether describe and draw techniques increase students’ speaking ability. The subject of this research was the tenth-grade students of SMK Abdurrahman Wahid Banjarmadu in the academic year of 2021/2022. This research used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Mixed methods are used because this research produces two types of data: a pre- experimental design and descriptive qualitative. This study carried at tenth grade of SMK Abdurrahman Wahid Banjarmadu in June 2022. The sample consists of 13 students. This research was conducted by speaking test, observation, questionnaire, and interview. The data were analyzed by using statistics 22 for windows, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verifying. The result of the observation, questionnaire, and interview, the describe and draw technique affects students speaking ability. The students claimed that describe and draw technique increase their speaking ability such as improving cooperation between friends, helping students speak more confidently, students not afraid when speaking English and helps the student add new vocabulary and understanding of how to pronounce good words, describe and draw technique make students more fluent when speaking. The result of descriptive statistics analysis that describe and draw technique was effective with a mean score of the post-test 74,6 was higher than the mean of pre-test 53,1. For hypothesis testing using a paired-sample t-test s significance (2-tailed) value level of analyzing data was .00, which was lower than .05, which means the Ha was accepted. Therefore, describe and draw technique was effective on increase the students speaking ability for the tenth grade of SMK Abdurrahman Wahid Banjarmadu in the academic year of 2021/2022.
