Abstract

The background of the study highlights the importance of writing skills in education and personal development, as well as the challenges students face in creative writing. This research focused on the integration of ChatGPT from OpenAI to improve students' creative writing skills at SMKN 1 Lamongan, as well as students' perceptions of the use of this technology The purpose of this research was to explore the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT in creative writing teaching and learning activities at SMKN 1 Lamongan during the 2023/2024 academic year.. The method used in this study was the descriptive qualitative method, which focused on ChatGPT integration and students' perspectives when this technology is used in school. The subjects of this study were grade 12 AK 1 students of SMKN 1 Lamongan. This research used various research instruments, including observation to collect data from real-world scenarios, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires to gather insights into students' experiences using ChatGPT, and documents to assess improvements and patterns in writing skills after ChatGPT implementation. Triangulation and condensation were used in the data analysis process. Based on the research results, the use of ChatGPT in creative writing showed evidence of pre-test and post-test scores showing an increase from an average of 2.3 to 3.4. Students’ perceptions of ChatGPT were generally positive. Most students stated that ChatGPT helped them find fresh ideas and write better. Effective integration of ChatGPT as a learning aid has the potential to improve students' writing skills and creativity. However, it requires close supervision and is currently limited by technical issues. It can be concluded that the integration of AI into the teaching and learning process needs to be supported to achieve improved teaching methods according to targets. The researcher also suggested that educators integrate AI tools like ChatGPT into their teaching methodologies to enhance creative writing skills. Future research should focus on developing new theoretical frameworks for AI in education and comparing various AI-based instruments to improve educational practices.
