Abstract
Idiomatic expressions are an integral part of language proficiency, students often face difficulties in understanding and translating them accurately. These students may encounter challenges in accurately translating English Idiom due to the lack of exposure to the target culture and restricted language resources available to them. Furthermore, the cultural differences between Indonesian and English, as well as the lack of equivalent idiomatic expressions in Indonesian, pose additional challenges for these students. This research focuses on the strategies they use when translating English idioms into Indonesian and the difficulties students face. Using a translation test and interviews to collect data, the study aimed to identify preferred translation strategies and common challenges. The research design employed a qualitative methods approach, qualitative data collection and analysis. Conducted with sixth-semester students at Islamic University Darul Ulum Lamongan, this study involved 11 female and 1 male student. The component involved administering a translation test to 12 students, focusing on their strategies for translating idioms. The qualitative aspect included analyzing students' difficulties and attitudes towards idiom translation through detailed observations and follow-up interviews. Data was collected through a translation test to identify students' strategies for translating idioms. There are three main stages of data analysis used in this study: data condensation, data visualization, conclusion drawing, or verification. This research examines various translation strategies for idioms, revealing that students employed four out of five identified strategies. The most frequently used strategy was translating idioms with similar meaning but dissimilar form and this finding shows that many students struggled with finding equivalents, had difficulty translating idioms, and faced challenges in understanding their meaning due to frequency differences. These findings highlight the significant challenges students face and underscore the need for targeted teaching strategies. Enhancing students' exposure to idiomatic expressions and their cultural contexts, along with focused instructional methods, is essential to improve their translation skills and overall language proficiency.
