Abstract
This research aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the instructional approaches used by ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers on YouTube Language Learning Videos (LLV), with a particular focus on grammar lessons related to tenses. This research used a comparative method to analyze the instructional methodologies employed by two prominent channels, English with Lucy and Kampung Inggris LC, in delivering grammar lessons to English language learners. Through a detailed examination of video content, pedagogical techniques, and learner engagement strategies, the analysis aimed to shed light on the effectiveness of different teaching approaches in the context of online language education. The results showed that one of the channels, "English with Lucy," used a combination of deductive and inductive teaching methods, which encouraged a comprehensive understanding and practical application of tenses. Lucy started with a deductive approach, introduced the general concept of tenses, and gave explicit explanations of their structure and usage. She then used an inductive approach, encouraged students to observe patterns and identify common characteristics among different tenses. This dual methodology allowed students to grasp the basic concepts before moving on to the application. In contrast, Kampung Inggris LC adopted an inductive approach, which emphasized developing students' communication skills through interaction and language use in everyday life. This method prioritized practical communication, encouraging students to actively speak and engage in English. While Lucy's approach offered a structured and detailed explanation of the rules of tenses, Kampung Inggris LC focused more on the practical application of these tenses in communication. The researcher concluded that both programs effectively addressed the three dimensions of grammar: Form, Usage, and Meaning. Both "English with Lucy" and "Kampung Inggris LC" provided clear explanations of the forms of tenses, emphasized their meaning, and demonstrated their use in various contexts The researcher suggests that the different teaching approaches and emphasis on the three dimensions of grammar have practical implications for EFL and ESL learners, with "English with Lucy" and "Kampung Inggris LC" offering valuable insights into effective language teaching methods and a variety of approaches for learners to choose from.
