Abstract

This study is motivated by the challenges or difficulties faced by English teachers in teaching elementary school students in course institutions which consist of five aspects, namely motivation, graded groups, attention, cognitive development, and assessment. This study aims to identify and analyze the challenges faced by teachers when teaching English courses for primary school students and to explore effective strategies used by teachers to overcome challenges in teaching English courses for primary school students. This study uses Qualitative Descriptive method. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used interviews and observations as instruments in collecting data. The subjects of this study were English teachers who taught elementary school students at the Safe House Babat course institution, as many as four teachers as participants to be interviewed then the researcher observed two teachers when teaching in class. The results of this study, where in this interview technique the researcher concluded that there were five aspects that became the teacher's challenges in teaching elementary school students in English language course institutions, namely challenges in motivation, multilevel groups, attention, cognitive development, and assessment. Then in cognitive development the challenge is for students who have difficulty in grammar and pronunciation so that the teacher must provide tricks, namely training vocabulary to students and the last is the challenge in assessment that must be considered by the teacher is the ability of each child so that when giving an assessment it can be adjusted to the child's ability and also the attitude affects every assessment. The results for observation activities, researchers divide into three activities when teachers teach in class, namely Pre-teaching, whilst teaching and Post-teaching and the two teachers I have observed have carried out teaching activities well. Suggestions that can be given for researchers who will conduct similar research in the future are the aspects used for this study only cover five aspects, therefore further research can add other aspects, when you want to collect data in the form of interview or observation data, it is better if the researcher discusses with the leadership at the institution, researchers must also pay attention to things that should not be researched or are sensitive in the course institution and It is hoped that this research can be a reference for similar research in the future.
