Abstract
This study is motivated by the challenges or difficulties faced by students in english writing skills, for example in writing narrative texts. This study was aimed to find out the determine at tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Sekaran in writing Narrative Text using short stories in the academic year of 2024. This study used Descriptive Qualitative method. To achieve the objectives research, researcher used interviews, observation and writing test as the instrument in collecting the data. The subject of this study were students of X-6 in SMAN 1 Sekaran, there were 30 students as the participants and there were two students as the respondent of the interview. This study used purposive sampling technique to determine the subject of the research. Based on the result of this study, the reseracher found that the ability in writing narrative text using short stories at tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Sekaran shows fair results. In the content aspect, it shows the percentage (10.7%) with good category. In the aspect of organisation shows the percentage (13.4%) with good category. In the aspect of vocabulary, it shows the percentage (9%) with fair category. In the grammar aspect, it shows a percentage (3.74%) in the poor category. The mechanical aspect showed a percentage of (8.66%) with the fair category. The obstacles faced by students during writing narrative texts using short stories include: students feel less confident and anxious when writing english narrative texts, sometimes students do not have ideas in writing narrative texts and students still have difficulty applying correct grammar when writing english narrative texts. It can be concluded that the use of learning media is very important in the learning process because it can provide benefits for teachers and students to be more effective in giving and receiving material. Based on these conclusions, the researcher provides several suggestions and input to readers, It is hoped that future researcher can provide examples of the use of learning media and also provide inspiration for teachers to pay more attention to students' understanding and the learning process in english classes. Apart from that, with the short story media in writing narrative texts in writing classes that researchers use in this research, it is hoped that English teachers can also provide alternative methods, tricks and media that are still effective for the student learning process.
