Abstract
Writing has always been a very crucial skill to master, but many Indonesian students find writing in English challenging as it is not their primary language. They often struggle with generating grammar and vocabulary, particularly when writing biography texts. Addressing these challenges requires tailored interventions using technology-based tools, such as the Hemingway application, which offers real-time feedback on writing mechanics and style. This study evaluate the effectiveness of the Hemingway Software Application in enhancing high school students' writing skills by comparing their performance before and after using the Hemingway Software Application, providing insights into effective educational strategies. The researchers used a random sampling technique to select a sample of 20 students from the population. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a single group pre-test and post-test. After the treatment, students were tested using the Hemingway Software Application, specifically with a biography writing test. The population consisted of class X Culinary students at SMK Negeri 1 Lamongan, with the sample drawn from class X Culinary 1 and 2. Data collection involved administering writing tests to measure changes in writing skills. The data which were gained from those two occasions, then, were analyzed by using paired samples t-test in IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The data analysis revealed a significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test. The mean post-test score was higher than the mean pre-test score, with the pre-test mean at 61.55 and the post-test mean at 77.55. This indicates that the Hemingway Software App effectively enhances students' writing skills. Hypothesis testing further confirms the effectiveness of the Hemingway Software Application, showing a significance value of less than 0.05, which indicates higher student learning achievement after using the application. Therefore, there is a significant improvement (Hi) in students' writing skills before and after the treatment with the Hemingway Software Application.
