Abstract
This research investigates the effectiveness of using English subtitled Japanese anime, specifically A Silent Voice, to enhance English vocabulary mastery among tenth grade students at SMA Ahmad Yani 2 Baureno. The study employed a one group pretest posttest experimental design with a mixed method approach, involving 22 participants. Quantitative data were obtained from vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment, while qualitative data were collected through an open ended questionnaire. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary scores, with the mean increasing from 9.45 to 12.41. This result is supported by both quantitative and qualitative findings that further highlight the impact of the treatment. The paired sample t test confirmed that the difference was statistically significant. Moreover, qualitative findings indicated that most students felt more motivated, confident, and engaged in learning English through anime subtitles. They reported increased interest, emotional involvement, and active vocabulary retention strategies. These findings support the integration of multimedia tools, particularly anime with English subtitles, as an effective and enjoyable method to enhance vocabulary mastery and learner motivation in EFL classrooms.
